Powercoat Canada Newsletter 14
Issue 14 - March 18, 2022

The new coatings season for 2022 is almost upon us and this year is going to be full of all kinds of challenges but also all kinds of new opportunities.
This will be the first year that tradeshows make a big comeback and this means that you can get your business in front of people who are looking for your services which is huge. People want to get out and attend these shows so make sure you get into your local home show.
Expecting another big year PowerCOAT is ramping up our inventory on everything to make sure that we have product for our clients. We have added a few new product lines to our offerings which will give you some more opportunities for bigger sales. We have you covered for anything and everything needed for interior or exterior coatings in almost every market.
Raw material shortages still plague the market but we expect this issue to be resolved sometime this year.
This is where the "New Mindset" comes into play...
The coatings market is changing and by that I mean it's getting more expensive due to raw material costs, freight costs and other factors causing inflation. We need to get out of the old mindset of selling ourselves, our skills, our experience, our knowledge and our products for the lowest price just to get the job. We need to better educate our clients that we bring more to the table than a warm body that works for peanuts. They need to understand that it costs more to get a job done correctly as opposed to hiring someone that will make mistakes. In the end mistakes always end up costing more than just doing it right the first time, we all have lots of examples of this.
We have noticed that applicators in both the decorative floor coatings and the spray in bedliner market are scared to increase their prices for fear of not getting the job. As an example the average retail price for a truckbed liner in Canada has always been around $500. Last year the truckbed liner market was shut off for a few months due to material shortages and then there were huge price increases on chemicals as soon as they were available again. The retail price of truckbeds is still on average $500, NO CHANGE.
Decorative floor coatings are no different, they have been stuck at $6 a sq ft or less for a number of years now with NO CHANGE in sight.
We need to CHANGE this!
Yes there are always going to be bottom feeders that get into the coatings industry and get out just as fast as they can't make a living but you need to show your prospective clients that the reason you may be priced higher is that you plan on being around longer than a single season.
Figure out your approach but don't leave money on the table as all you are doing is hurting yourself.

We realize we are a bit late on this but as any Hockey fan knows Canada's Women's Team beat The American Women's Team in Hockey for the Gold Medal!
As usual Scorpion USA and Scorpion Canada (PowerCOAT) made a friendly wager on this game. 4 years ago when Canada's team choked in the final game and lost to the USA, Terry had to sing the American anthem which was to say the least was an interesting watch (Click here to watch this video).
This time though Canada won and so Beau from Scorpion USA had to cough up the Canadian anthem and some other goodies which Terry is both wearing and displaying in the pic above.
Click here to watch Beau's attempt at our national anthem.
We shall see what the next Olympics brings for a fun bet!

Spring Training Classes Starting Soon!!
Another victim of the last 2 years of Covid has been in person training classes to apply decorative floor coatings. Well that's about to end with the re-introduction of PowerCOAT's training classes.
Unlike most companies that provide training with their products PowerCOAT does not just bring you into our warehouse and slap some product down on the floor while doing a dog and pony show while you stand and watch. You may as well stay home and watch a video. Why pay to watch someone roll epoxy?
PowerCOAT offers training in a real world setting where YOU will be the one applying the products with our team guiding you every step of the way. This way you see what it's like to work on an actual floor in real world conditions. This is a 2 day course with limited booking so if you are interested in learning how to coat a garage floor then this course is for you.

How do you spray Scorpion XO2?
For over 20 years now Scorpion applicators have been spraying our premium XO2 Bedliner from a very simple Al's Liner hopper gun. One of the issues with that gun is that it doesn't have a lid so it can be difficult to spray in some areas. It also doesn't have a locking mechanism to attach the hopper to the gun so if you aren't careful it can come off. These issues are can be easily overlooked as the Al's Liner gun is the most popular gun and it's very affordable.
A few years ago Graco came out with their new Tex Spray Hopper gun. This gun is very similar to the Al's Liner gun but it has a few extra features. The first feature is that it has a lockable lid so product can't be spilled if you tip the gun over to spray sideways. The other feature is that the hopper is pressurized which allows you to achieve more diverse textures with the XO2 Bedliner.
PowerCOAT Canada is stocking the new Graco Gun so if you want to up your game give us a call and we can get one out to you.
Colored quartz granules are a fantastic way to turn your drab exterior surfaces into a beautiful work of art. Every time people think of quartz they think of counter tops or slabs of quartz but colored quartz granules are used in decorative coatings as well.

Scorpion Application Spotlight
Duncan Dodge Chrysler in Duncan, British Columbia has been spraying Scorpion XO2 for a number of years now and every time we see new pictures from them they get better and better! In fact they now even spray Scorpion Bedliners for the local Ford Dealership as well. Both companies see the quality of Scorpion XO2.
In the pictures of the Jeep below Chris Belair at Duncan sprayed the entire inside and outside of the Jeep to give the owner a Jeep that will take all kinds of abuse and still look good in the end.
Great work Chris and the team at Duncan Dodge!!
