DeRUST LIQUID: Dip Tanks and Immersion Applications

Use LIQUID for dip tanks, immersion applications and suitable flushing systems. It is not intended for spray application because it does not cling to surfaces.

In dip and immersion tanks, LIQUID can be reused for weeks or months, depending on rust severity and the number and size of parts treated. Filter out sediment and add fresh product to recharge the treatment.

Applications and Surface Compatibility

DeRUST is suitable for indoor and outdoor rust-removal projects, including marine maintenance, shops and chandleries, specialty automotive work, equipment refurbishment, parts and tool restoration, metalworking, bicycle maintenance, and home and outdoor projects.

It removes rust and iron surface contamination from steel, steel alloys, stainless steel, aluminum, certain other metals and painted metals. It can also address some cross-contamination staining on concrete, certain natural stone surfaces and some plastics. DeRUST also removes patina from copper and brass.

For rust bleed and cross-contamination on other surfaces, confirm suitability with a test patch before proceeding.

Surface Preparation and Application

Clean Before Treating

Preclean surfaces to remove oil, grease, dirt and other contaminants using Protocol’s DEEP CLEAN XTREME or another alkaline cleaner or degreaser. Remove loose or heavy rust scale with a stiff brush before treatment.

Dwell Time and Removal

Dwell time ranges from approximately 30 minutes to 24 hours, depending on rust severity. Warmer temperatures increase working speed and reduce dwell time. Always perform a test patch to establish suitable dwell or immersion time.

Wipe, wash or pressure wash off as appropriate. DeRUST can remain on surfaces overnight or until removal is convenient without pitting or corroding healthy metal. GEL that has hardened into a crust requires pressure washing.

Porous Surfaces

On porous surfaces such as concrete, soaking the affected area with LIQUID before covering it with GEL may improve results. Refer to the individual technical data sheets for detailed application instructions.
